About Kurukshetra District -
The name of the district is derived from the ancient region of Kurukshetra  which means of 'The land of the Kurus'. This district was carved out from the erstwhile Karnal district on 23rd January, 1973, with Thanesar as district Headquarter. 

The Kurukshetra 
War took place in this region which is described in the Mahabharata epic. Later some parts of Kurukshetra district was transferred to Kaithal and Yamunanagar districts at the time of their creation. 

Location and Territories 
This district is the part of Ambala division and also one of the geographical divisions of Haryana state. The district is surrounded by Yamunanagar district to the East, Ambala district to the North, Karnal and Kaithi to the South and Patiala district of Punjab to the North-West. Markanda and Saraswati are the important rivers of the district. 

It is Famous For
This district is famous for the Mahabharata War/ Kurukshetra War. Thus, it is also known as Dharmakshetra (Holy place) and Land of the Bhagavad Gita. In 2017, the government declared Kurukshetra a 'Holy City'. The district has many tourists places like Brahmasarovar, Jyotisar, Dharohar Museum, Sheikh Chilli's Tomb, Crocodile Breeding Centre, Chhilchhila Sanctuary Saraswati Wildlife Sanctuary, Kalpana Chawla Planetarium, SallNhlt Sarovar, Shri Ventakeswara Swamy Temple and many others.
